Drug Resistant HIV

This month we have decided to highlight a recent report by the BBC Newsnight programme which identified a huge leap in the number of people with drug-resistant HIV.

The virus that leads to Aids is constantly mutating, but a few years ago it was almost unheard of for people to show resistance to anti-Aids drugs.

The government statistics that Newsnight obtained suggest more than a quarter of newly-infected HIV-positive patients are now drugs resistant - a figure that has gone up five fold in four years.

As the virus becomes more dangerous, those most at risk seem to be more complacent.
