The morning after pill is essentially a high dose of the ordinary
contraceptive pill. Taken in 2 doses 12 hours apart, it works by
artificially altering hormone levels.
Levonelle uses the hormone
progesterone to upset the delicate balance in the body which allows the
recently-fertilised egg to implant in the womb.
The womb sheds its lining
which would sustain the embryo, and menstruation occurs early. After
conception, there is a 72-hour window in which an embryo may implant.
The morning after pill can
work only if it is taken within this time. In the first 2 days after
conception, it is 95% effective. This drops to 58% within 48 to 72
hours after unprotected sex.
If the drug works, the embryo
rapidly breaks down.
