So our daughters are about to be assailed with yet another chemical
panacea. This one, in the form of the morning after pill, claims to
be able to sort out all the complexities of mismanaged sexual conduct.
Once again parents will hear alarm bells ring: they will be worried and
angry and beset by a growing felling of helplessness.
The Government's decision to make the morning after pill available at
£20 a time to young women aged 16 and over without prescription signals a
further diminution of their own role as parents.
It is yet another blow against the family.
Instead of encouraging young women to talk about their sexual and
emotional lives and problems, we're giving the message that sex is
value-free and that there are no moral or emotional issues involved.
Meanwhile, common sense tells parents that their daughters will be more
vulnerable than ever in spite of protestations that the morning after pill
will prevent many unwanted pregnancies. There will be no doctor
standing by for guidance.
A young woman will have to rely solely on her own judgement, when often
she will be in no state to make a judgement.
