Abortion

Q1. If a woman has an abortion can she still have another child later on?
A. Abortion can have physical effects on the body that may prevent the mother being able to have a child in the future.  In the majority of cases however the woman is able to have children in the future.

Q2. Can you get an abortion in Northern Ireland?

A. No, abortion is illegal in Northern Ireland.

Q3. Please help me?  I'm 15 and I want an abortion.  I can't tell my parents and I am sure this is the right decision, as I don't want a baby, and neither does my boyfriend.
A. You must be very frightened and concerned.  Did you do a pregnancy test yourself or was it a chemist or a doctor?  How does your boyfriend feel about you being pregnant?  Certainly a lot of girls who become pregnant mid-teens feel just as you do that abortion is the only solution.

It is important that you do take time to consider your options before making a decision. Both you and your boyfriend need to talk the situation through rather than making a decision quickly and regretting it later.

It may seem an impossible thought to tell your parents but often talking to them helps even though they may be shocked or upset.  In our experience they usually are supportive and if you were to think of roles reversed “would you want to be there for your daughter, if she were pregnant?”

You can visit our ‘Care In Crisis’ Centre at 39 Union Street, Lurgan, Northern Ireland; or telephone us on (028) 3832 9900.  Our centre also has a web site at www.careincrisis.org.uk.

If you have a question that is not answered in the above selection please go to
the 'Ask a Question' page and submit your question online.  We will be glad to
answer any question that you may have.
