Pregnancy

Q1. Is childbirth really painful?
A. Everyone’s experience of childbirth is different.  Don’t worry about it too much though as thousands of women give birth every day and go through it again many more times!  There are a number of ways the hospital can give pain relief, and generally women find the experience tiring but very worthwhile!

Q2. At what time of the month are you most likely to get pregnant?

A. Although in theory there are only a few days in the month that you can become pregnant, in reality a girl can get pregnant at any stage of the month because the time of ovulation may vary from month to month and sperm can survive up to six days after sex.  You are most likely to get pregnant 14 days before your next period is due providing your cycle is regular.

Q3. I've recently had oral sex with my boyfriend, the problem is I think I might be pregnant!  Although we didn't have full intercourse, while having oral sex he ejaculated!  I'm worried because if I'm pregnant I cannot tell may parents as they would be disappointed and angry at me!  What should I do?  How is it possible to get a pregnancy testing kit without having to go into a shop and buy one and your parents finding out?

A. First of all can I reassure you that you cannot get pregnant through oral sex.  It is however possible to catch a sexually transmitted infection through any skin-to-skin contact with the genital area of another person.  Condoms/dental dams reduce the risk of infection but do not completely remove the risk.

Certainly if you had vaginal intercourse and your period is late then you should have a pregnancy test which can be done by your GP or family planning clinic (addresses are in the phone book).

A pregnancy test can also be purchased from the chemist or the chemist can often do a pregnancy test for you. There are also a number of crisis pregnancy centres that offer 'free pregnancy tests' and these are listed in the phone book/yellow pages.

It is very easy to get pregnant or pick up a sexually transmitted disease infection and you should talk through your sexual choices with someone older you can trust - possibly a parent or teacher who will help you work through the possible consequences of sexual choices you may make.

If you do choose to continue sexually with your boyfriend you should also talk to a doctor (GP or family planning clinic) who will see you confidentially to discuss contraception and health issues in general.

Remember you are a special person, respect yourself as you deserve to be respected by others.

Q4. I'm pregnant and afraid of telling someone.  Also when I heard what can happen to you concerning STI's I started to get afraid even though I have no symptoms.  What will I do?

A. Thanks for your question.  Can I say you were very brave to write.  I am sure you are frightened concerning pregnancy.

Have you managed to tell anyone?  It would be best to talk things through at home, with a teacher, doctor/GP/health visitor, or even to call in/phone ‘Care in Crisis’ which is a crisis pregnancy centre in Lurgan, Northern Ireland.  The phone number is (028) 3832 9900 or visit their web site at www.careincrisis.org.uk.  We offer a confidential support/counselling service.  Would a friend come with you?

Certainly the STI’s are an issue for teenagers who choose to have sex but it depends on what choice you have made concerning relative risk - how many different sexual partners?  their sexual partners?  whether condoms were used?  The most important thing at the moment is confirming pregnancy (if not already done) and telling a supportive person (ideally a parent or teacher). Any GP or Family Planning Clinic would also offer medical advice.

You could also telephone the Careline Helpline - a U.K. based service - which offers support to those dealing with pregnancy issues.

Q5. If I have sex with my girlfriend during her period and I ejaculate can she still become pregnant.

A. Yes your girlfriend could get pregnant any time of her cycle.  In theory there are only 2 or 3 fertile days every month for the woman but in practice as we discussed during the presentation it is very easy for a guy to make a girl pregnant.
